The Excellence Punta Cana is a fully integrated upscale destination with“walkability”focused around its large and lovely grounds. The resort encourages slow walking as paths twist through thick tropical gardens, over pretty bridges, beside the huge river-like swimming pool. One can spend hours just wandering the impeccably maintained grounds to discover hidden jacuzzis or walking from your suite to any one of the restaurants, the Miilé Spa set apart in its own building or main plaza entertainment at night. This internal walkability forms a significant share of that laid-back feeling which seeps into you here.

The other main area for walking is the spectacular Uvero Alto beach. Directly accessible from the pool area of the resort, it is a wide, golden sand beach running seemingly endlessly in both directions. Perfect for a long romantic walk at sunrise or sunset, this section of the beach has huge palms lining it and feels very private and undeveloped compared to the crowds further down at Bavaro. You can walk 30-40 minutes in either direction past just a handful of other high-end resorts and large stretches of completely untouched coastline where it feels like you have the whole beach to yourself.

What most people fail to realize is that once outside the resort gates, there is absolutely nothing within walking distance. The hotel sits in a secluded remote location accessible via a private road. No local towns, shops, markets, or restaurants are available to stroll to. This is part of its charm and appeal that there is such privacy and security and calmness- no outside vendors or noise of any kind! All external excursions be it casino or a local town visit will have to be by a pre-arranged taxi or a tour.
